The Tequila Revolution

by StephensonsDecember 8, 2025December 10, 2025

Previously, tequila was reserved for shots to be endured after drinking a few rounds, usually as part of celebratory occasions or challenges for students during fresher’s week. While many of us might have a few (hazy) memories of drinking this traditional Mexican spirit—perhaps grimacing slightly afterwards—there is so much more that tequila has to offer, and people have started to take notice.

Although there will still be many who choose to down a few shots to get the party going, there has been a noticeable increase in recent years of people who are enjoying the full flavour profiles of premium tequila. It is a drink to be savoured, much like a top-quality whisky. This is a trend that has certainly taken then US by storm, and while the UK might not be as in love with tequila just yet, there are certainly signs that it is winning people over here, too. This is why it has been listed at a key opportunity for one of the strongest growth areas in 2024.

Classic tequila cocktails are amongst consumer favourites, with the margarita being the most searched cocktail in the UK last year, according to analysis of Google research data by MGN. It can also be seen across bars in the UK, with many curating their cocktail menus to include various twists on a traditional margarita and introducing new flavours. Ramona in Manchester is one great example of this, as well as Southside in Withington, a bar dedicating itself to an array of quality tequilas, cocktails, and Mexican beers and food. A place that is a true celebration of this influential culture.

Bars don’t have top stop at tequila sunrises, paloma’s, and margaritas, however. There has also been a movement that has seen tequila replace other spirits in classic cocktails such as old fashioned’s, espresso martinis, and the Bloody Maria, which is likely a popular choice at bottomless brunches.

There has been a noticeable rise of Mexican eateries opening up across the UK as well. It’s not a cuisine that has been uncommon before, but Tex-Mex style food has mainly been on offer in the past. Now there is a growing interest in authentic Mexican dishes and flavours, and this is reflected in the types of restaurants and even street food vendor offerings that are popping up around the country.

This is likely thanks to a drive for authentic and quality foods, and Mexican dishes are often made with relatively healthy ingredients that could be a draw for those concerned with wellness trends and lifestyles. Additionally, many of these recipes either are or can be adapated easily for vegetarian and vegan diners. With an interest in Mexican cuisine increasing, this itself lends to a boost in tequila’s appeal, particularly when bars and restaurants offer those premium options to enjoy.

So, what can hospitality businesses do to make the most of the tequila trend? While your customers might still enjoy the novelty of shots, investing in premium tequilas that can be leisurely sipped is a good start. Using these better quality tequilas in your cocktails can also be beneficial, and consider being more creative with your cocktail menus when it comes to this spirit. Looking at flavoured tequila options in another avenue worth exploring. Similar to how flavoured gins become popular during the spirit’s renaissance of the 2010s, more flavoured tequilas are creeping onto the market now, offering alternative options and more unique drinking experiences.
